Kai Tak Sports Park Fully Supports "Hong Kong Football Festival 2025", Implementing Measures to Create a Low-Carbon, Environmentally Friendly Event Venue and Promote a Green Sports Future
(July 23, 2025) Kai Tak Sports Park (the Sports Park) is Hong Kong's home venue and the largest integrated sports and entertainment landmark. We are committed to promoting Hong Kong's sustainable development by integrating carbon reduction elements into design, construction, and operations. By enhancing connectivity with the community, encouraging the use of public transportation, and implementing waste reduction measures, we aim to create environmentally friendly, low-carbon event venues and pioneer a new chapter for green sports development in Hong Kong.
Leading the Way with a Large-Scale Waste Decomposition System and Promoting a "Reduce Plastic" Culture
Guided by the principles of cherishing resources, reducing waste, and promoting resource recycling, the Sports Park has implemented a comprehensive waste sorting and recycling system. It is also one of the few large-scale sports venues to introduce a large-scale waste decomposition system that converts food waste, paper cups, and other paper containers into compost for fertilizing plants, enhancing waste utilization and landscape maintenance. In addition, the paper cups used in the park are environmentally certified and degradable, promoting a "reduce plastic" culture, reducing the use of plastic tableware, and enhancing the audience experience.
The microbial decomposition system, which began operations in March of this year, specializes in processing food waste and paper waste during large-scale events. It is estimated to convert over 200 tons of waste annually, with nearly 85% of the solid waste being converted into water vapor. During the "Hong Kong Football Festival 2025," this system will operate 24 hours a day, using heating, mixing, deodorization, and sterilization to process nearly 600 kilograms of waste daily, converting it into 100 kilograms of compost. This will further reduce waste disposal and decrease the additional resources and carbon emissions associated with transporting and cleaning reusable containers.
Waste Decomposition Process:
Implementing Measures to Promote Waste Reduction Through the "3Rs"
As Hong Kong's largest integrated sports and entertainment landmark, the Sports Park has consistently implemented comprehensive waste recycling and management measures to effectively reduce solid waste generation. In addition to providing large-scale waste sorting and recycling bins and implementing the "3Rs" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to maximize the use of resources, the venue actively utilizes innovative technologies to achieve waste reduction.
John Sharkey, CEO of Kai Tak Sports Park, stated: "To welcome the four major international football teams to compete at Kai Tak Sports Park, we will provide a variety of food and beverages for the fans. To enhance the audience experience, we will feed the collected food waste, paper cups, and other paper containers into the park's large decomposition system. We hope that while everyone enjoys the football matches, we can actively promote 'reducing plastics' and waste reduction, and contribute to sustainable development."
Green Building Design to Reduce Energy Consumption
In addition, the buildings in the Sports Park are equipped with the latest energy-saving systems to reduce overall energy consumption. For example, over 10% of the roof area is covered with solar panels to provide hot water and electricity, effectively reducing approximately 1,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. The venues also have rainwater harvesting systems, and the recycled rainwater meets approximately 25% of the irrigation needs of the venues. The park's greening rate exceeds 30%, with over 1,000 trees planted to reduce the urban heat island effect and improve visual comfort, providing a more comfortable recreational space for the surrounding community.
