Kai Tak Sports Park Holds the Flag-raising Ceremony Cum Fun Day To Celebrate the 76th National Day

(1 October 2025, Hong Kong) Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) held its first National Day Flag-raising Ceremony today (1 October), celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Over a hundred distinguished guests attended the Ceremony, which also featured interactive booths showcasing Chinese culture and a national security education exhibition. These activities attracted large crowds of citizens and tourists, filling KTSP with a vibrant and festive National Day atmosphere.

The Flag-raising Ceremony was held at the garden south of the Kai Tak Stadium. Distinguished guests included representatives from the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, led by the  Secretary, Miss Rosanna LAW, along with the Permanent Secretary, Ms Vivian SUM and Commissioner for Sports, Mr. George TSOI; the Deputy Director General of the Kowloon Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr. GUO Changyong; LegCo Members Mr. Kenneth FOK and Mr. Bill TANG; Assistant District Officer (Kowloon City), Mr. Kenneth WU; representatives from Hong Kong Army Cadets Association, included President, Mr. LI Ning, and Chairman, Dr Bunny CHAN; representatives from Po Leung Kuk, included Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. LAU Chi Chung, and Principal Education Secretary (Pre-primary & Primary Education), Ms Jessica MAN. They were accompanied by Mr. Christopher CHENG and Mr. Gilbert HO, Director and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited; representatives from Kai Tak Sports Park, included Chief Executive Officer, Mr. John SHARKEY, and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Thomas TONG. Crowds of citizens gathered at the Dining Cove from early in the morning, eagerly awaiting the solemn Flag-raising Ceremony.

As the Flag-raising Ceremony commenced, guests stood solemnly while “Ode to the Motherland” played. The Hong Kong Army Cadets Flag Guard marched into the ceremony with pride and firm steps in perfect synchrony. Students from Po Leung Kuk Lam Man Chan English Primary School sang the National Anthem. As the clear and resonant voices filled the air, the National Flag of the People's Republic of China was raised to full mast. All guests sang the National Anthem together, extending their best wishes for the continued prosperity and strength of the Motherland. 

Following the ceremony, KTSP’s Central Square transformed into a lively hub with interactive cultural booths that drew enthusiastic participation from citizens and tourists. Mr. John SHARKEY, Chief Executive Officer of Kai Tak Sports Park, joined the public in celebrating the occasion. He stated, “We are delighted to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China with the community. As the first National Day event since the grand opening of Kai Tak Sports Park, this marks not only a significant milestone in our development but also a valuable opportunity to strengthen community bonds. Through these celebrations, we hope to bring people together and foster a greater sense of belonging.”

Many families joined the Fun Day, enjoying nostalgic local snacks such as Ding Ding candy, candy and coconut wrap, and Dragon’s Beard candy. Children and adults took part in experiencing traditional Chinese cultural activities, including sugar painting, flour doll making, DIY fragrant sachets, grasshopper weaving, Chinese knotting, paper cutting, and calligraphy. The complimentary ice cream booth was a hit among children, while many visitors explored the national security education exhibition. In collaboration with environmental groups, KTSP also set up a green-themed booth showcasing its sustainability measures and promoting waste sorting and recycling through interactive games. 

A parent shared that National Day is an important occasion and brought their children to KTSP to celebrate together, participate in interactive activities, and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture, making it both a joyful and educational holiday.

A family of tourists from Mainland, visiting Hong Kong during the National Day Golden Week, made a special trip to Kai Tak Sports Park to enjoy the National Day festivities and visited Kai Tak Mall for lunch and shopping.
