Kai Tak Sports Park Champions a Sustainable Future: Pioneering an Eco-Friendly Venue and Promoting Plastic-Free Culture

Date20 Aug 2025

(20 August 2025, Hong Kong) As the largest integrated sports and entertainment landmark in Hong Kong, Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) is dedicated to promoting a sustainable community and creating a world-class, low-carbon, eco-friendly venue. From design and construction to operations, KTSP implements numerous carbon reduction measures, embodying the principles of resource conservation and recycling.
During major events, KTSP actively demonstrates its dedication to environmental stewardship through visible eco-friendly initiatives. A robust waste recycling and regeneration system promotes a 'plastic-free' culture. Through these sustainable practices, KTSP transcends its role as just a venue for sports and concerts; it serves as a critical platform for advancing Hong Kong's green economy, facilitating the synergistic development of sports, entertainment, and environmental responsibility, and fostering a sustainable economic future for the community.

Comprehensive Green Management Inside and Outside the Venue
During major events held at KTSP, tens of thousands of visitors flock to the Sports Park. To embody the principles of resource conservation and waste reduction, KTSP has implemented a comprehensive waste sorting and recycling management system. Large recycling bins are strategically placed throughout the venue to collect metals, paper, plastics, and glass containers. This initiative adheres to the principal of maximizing resource use and promoting recycling. Additionally, KTSP actively employs innovative technologies to enhance waste reduction efforts.
Upon entry, KTSP has deployed dedicated recycling ambassadors to promote environmental awareness and educate the public on resource sorting and recycling practices. These ambassadors also facilitate the immediate collection of useful waste and resources. After enjoying a variety of food and beverages, the on-site waste recovery team collects spectators’ used paper cups and food scraps. Leveraging the Sports Park's large-scale waste decomposition system, these materials are transformed into compost, which is then used for landscaping within the KTSP precinct. Thus, a cup of beer or soft drink enjoyed by spectators ultimately contributes to nurture the Sports Park's flowerbeds.

Promoting a Plastic-Free Culture and Enhancing Visitor Experience
KTSP actively promotes sustainability while ensuring safe and efficient operations. Certified biodegradable paper cups are used for beverages, and plastic utensils are replaced with wooden ones, along with bamboo chopsticks and bamboo napkins. Sugarcane straws and cup lids are provided only upon customer request, reducing plastic usage while maintaining food hygiene and ensuring responsible resource management. All food containers are made from compostable paper materials, avoiding single-use plastic products and actively promoting a plastic-free culture within the Sports Park.

Large-Scale Waste Decomposition System Converts Waste into Compost
Upholding its commitment to resource conservation and waste reduction, KTSP has introduced a microbial decomposition system to transform food waste, paper cups, and other paper containers generated within the venue into compost materials for plant fertilization. This initiative enhances waste utilization and landscape maintenance, embodying the principles of green management and resource recycling. It aims to significantly reduce waste disposal volumes while minimizing the additional resources and carbon emissions associated with transporting and cleaning containers. This waste decomposition system is expected to process over 200 tons of waste annually, with nearly 85% of solid waste transformed into water vapor, creating a "self-sustaining" micro-cycle that integrates environmental stewardship into daily operations.

Partnering with Baguio to Promote Plastic Bottle Circular Economy
KTSP has partnered with Baguio to promote the recycling, reborn and remanufacturing of beverage bottles. Plastic bottles collected throughout the Sports Park are centrally gathered and transported to Baguio’s sorting and recycling centre, where high-speed automated equipment uses Near-infrared technology to sort different types of bottles. Selected plastic bottles are then sent to a recycling facility in Tuen Mun’s EcoPark for label and contaminant removal, cutting, wet-shredding, and dual hot washing. Finally, food-grade ready rPET flakes are produced for downstream re-manufacturing new plastic bottles and other premium plastic products, reducing waste in a sustainable manner.

Looking ahead, a series of mega events are going to take place in KTSP. By reducing carbon emissions, promoting waste recycling, and attracting foot traffic, the Sports Park achieves a win-win situation where sports, entertainment, and environmental protection thrive together.
